LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by Sol Jaques the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds defeated the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons 30-10 in the second semi-final match at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship Friday evening at the Willoughby Community Park Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win advances the Vikes to Sunday’s national championship match.

Jaques with two tries, and Takoda McMullin with two penalty kicks and two conversions led the Thunderbirds, with Jared Andrews Almack, and Alastair Marshall each adding a try for the Thunderbirds. Kobe Faust with one try, and Tomas Dallan with a penalty kick and a conversion were the scorers for the Gryphons.

AS IT HAPPENED

Guelph’s Faust got the first score of the contest with a converted try at 9:30 to give the Gryphons a 7-0 lead. Four minutes later the Thunderbirds got on the board with a converted try by Jaques at 13:20 to tie the match at 7-7. UBC’s McMullin added two penalty kicks, at 17:40 and 28:35, to the Thunderbirds’ total to make the half-time score 13-7 for UBC.

The Gryphons got on the board first in the second half with a penalty kick by Dallan to cut the Thunderbirds’ lead to three points, 13-10 at 34:20. But from that point on it was all UBC as the Thunderbirds scored 17 unanswered points. Andrews Almack scored a try at 36:05, Marshall scored a try at 43:10, and Jaques had a converted try at 56:20 to finish of the 30-10 UBC victory.

No. 1 UBC will now play No. 2 Victoria in the championship match at 5 p.m. on Sunday. While No. 5 Guelph will play No. 6 Memorial in the bronze medal match at 2 p.m.
