LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds used an impressive performance to defeat the No. 8 Calgary Dinos 41-3 in the final quarter-final match at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship Wednesday afternoon at the. Willoughby Community Park Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win by the Thunderbirds sends them to the championship semi-finals Friday evening.

UBC’s Alastair Marshall and Talon McMullin each scored two tries to lead the Thunderbirds. With Takoda McMullin converting on three tries, and Jared Andrews Almack and Kieran Martin adding single tries. While Calgary’s lone scoring came from the foot of Max Therrien.

AS IT HAPPENED

The Thunderbirds opened the scoring at 1:16 with a try by Marshall and never looked back in the 38-point win. Marshall added a converted try less than four minutes later, 5:30, to put UBC up 12-0. Talon McMullin scored his first try at 11:10, with Andrews Almack adding his at 20:45 to put the Thunderbirds up 24-0. Talon McMullin got his second with Takoda McMullin converting to send UBC into the break with a 31-0 lead.

UBC came out of halftime and quickly added to their lead with Jacob Bourne’s try at 33:20 to put the T-Birds up 36-0. Calgary’s Therrien made the most of a UBC penalty to score the Dinos’ lone points on his penalty kick at 41:20. UBC’s Martin finished off the scoring on the night with his try at 59:30 to make the final 41-3 for the Thunderbirds.

UP NEXT 

No. 1 Thunderbirds will now play in the semi-finals against the No. 5 Guelph Griffins at 7:30 p.m. While No. 8 Calgary will play against the TWU Spartans at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played on Friday.
