LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 5 Trinity Western Spartans dominated the No. 8 Calgary Dinos to earn a 51-12 in the second consolation semi-final match at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship Friday afternoon at the Willoughby Community Park Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win advances the Spartans to the fifth-place match against the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Guiseppe Du Toit with five conversions and one penalty kick, Tim Zimmer with two tries, Nathanial Schroeder, Connor Bernardin, Joshua Olafsen, Liam Olafsen, and Lynden Duggan each with single tries led the Spartans. Scoring for the Dinos were Colin Petrillo and Nicholas Irwin with tries and Max Therrien with a conversion.
AS IT HAPPENED
Trinity Western opened the scoring early with a PK by Du Toit at 2:15 to give the Spartans an early 3-0 lead. Zimmer followed up with his first converted try at 5:35 to put TWU up 10-0. Bernardin’s converted try at 18:50 made it 17-0 for the Spartans. Calgary’s Petrillo got the Dinos on the board at 20:40 with an unconverted try at 20:40 to make the score 17-5 for the Spartans. Zimmer got his second converted try at 28:15 to make it a 19-point, 24-5, lead for TWU at 29:15. Du Toit made the half-time score 27-5 with a penalty kick at 30:00.
Schroeder got things started in the second half for the Spartans with a converted try at 36:30 to put TWU up 32-5. Joshua Olafsen made it 39-5 with an unconverted try at 44:40. Calgary answered with a converted try at 49:20 to make the score 39-12 for TWU. An unconverted try by Liam Olafsen at 51:15 followed by a converted try at 60:00 made the final 51-12 for the Spartans.

No. 5 Trinity Western will now play in the fifth-place match against No. 7 Queen’s. While No. 8 Calgary will play against No. 3 Ottawa for seventh place. Both matches will be played on Sunday.
