The CUMRC hosts, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, took to Matt Anthony Field to close out the opening day of men’s rugby action. The hometown team was matched up against the undefeated no. 2 ranked Guelph Gryphons, making for a thrilling contest.

Guelph touched the ball down first as Brenden Black broke through Ottawa’s defence. Tomas Dallan’s convert went through, establishing the opening 7-0 lead. The Gryphons doubled their lead at the 15 minute mark as their maul powered into the try zone.

RSEQ player of the year, Jamie Armstrong, weaved through Guelph’s defence to carry the ball in for the first Ottawa try of the tournament.

The Gryphons punched in another before halftime. David Scollon took the ball in for his second try of the evening, making it a 21-5 Guelph lead at halftime.

Guelph was quick to strike. Liam Bowman took it through the middle, racing down the field for a try two minutes into the second half.

Evan Roy was next to touch the ball down, pushing into the try zone after a Guelph penalty on the five-yard line. Glenn Roy sent the convert through to help the Gee-Gees lessen the gap.

Tomas Dallan and Josh Henry added tries, securing a 42-12 victory for Guelph.

The Gryphons advance to the semifinal where they will meet the Queen’s Gaels for a rematch of the OUA final on Friday at 7 p.m. (ET). The Gee-Gees will be back on the field Friday morning to take on the Victoria Vikes at 1 p.m. (ET).
