The CUMRC bronze medal match saw the no. 2 Guelph Gryphons matchup against the no. 1 UBC Thunderbirds for a Sunday afternoon game on Matt Anthony Field. The top ranked teams were hungry for victory following semifinal losses on Friday.
It was the Thunderbirds who claimed the hardware, earning a __ win to take home bronze and end the tournament on a win.
Talon McMullin was the first try scorer of the game, slipping between defenders to put points on the board for the Thunderbirds. UBC found their next try moments later and by the end of the first half, they established a 28-7 lead.
UBC continued their dominant play into the second half, Ben Beauchamp tapped the ball down for his first try of the day before McMullin stepped up to kick his fifth convert of the evening.
Tomas Dallan earned seven points for the Gryphons a minute later, racing down the wing for a try and kicking a successful convert.
Despite Guelph’s second half surge to close the gap, they couldn’t quite get ahead of UBC.
The Thunderbirds will head home with a bronze medal while the Gryphons finish the 2024 CUMRC with a fourth place finish.
