The No. 4-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks and No. 5-seeded ETS Piranhas were the first to take Matt Anthony Field for the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship on Wednesday morning.
ETS was first in the tryzone as Brahim Mahmoudi intercepted the ball right on the Memorial goal line at the 15th minute of play. The Piranhas added to their lead, running the ball
Nearing the end of the opening half, the Sea-Hawks scored their first try of the tournament. Sam Power touched the ball down in the middle of the endzone, giving JS Cook a perfect conversion opportunity.
To end the first half, ETS led Memorial 12-7.
A penalty on the five-yard line gave the Pirahnas a chance on the goal line only five minutes into the second half. Mathieu Bory touched down to extend the ETS lead.
A well-placed lineout put ETS in scoring position, Thibaut Boissise raced in on the wing to touch one last try down for the Piranhas in the final minute of play. Boissise’s try made it a 24-7 win for ETS.
With the win, ETS advances to Friday’s first championship semifinal where they will meet UBC at 4:30 p.m. (ET), while Memorial will fall to the consolation bracket where they will take on UBCO game set for 10:30 a.m. (ET).
